My biggest management problem

Within the volunteer organization I work at, there is a lot of tension between departments. These tensions develop because the job description of each department is not stated clearly. Many times we would have conflicts over the allocation of work. Many times, communication problems occur because volunteers only work on weekends, while the organization is open seven days a week. Many times, decisions are made and the volunteers are not notified in time, resulting in a pile of unexpected work thrown at them. Also, certain individuals feel that my department is favored over the others and therefore receives more funding.

My main concern is how to end these conflicts over job allocation and how to show my coworkers that the funding my department receives is well deserved.

What is your role in the organization that you are volunteering? As you describes, you know what are the problems, and what causes the problems, if it is within your authority, you should reasonablely know what to do; if not, you should report to your supervisor.

Take initiative.

May be you can even get a promotion.

It seems like you have quite a problem to deal with. It would be great if you could use the skills that you garner in this class to create a more efficeint organization.

I feel that drawn fish has hit the nail on the head. It sounds like the scope of your authority does not extend to being able to make these changes, however you have great ideas of job expectations, etc. Talk to your supervisor when you are there with these ideas. They then can run with them to the appropriate people who CAN make that difference.
