My Goals and Visions

1) I wish to become a high ranking officer within the NYPD

As I stated in my earlier blog entry, I am currently a cadet for the NYPD. After I graduate from college, I plan on entering the police academy. I could actually drop out of college right now and enter the academy, but I have chosen not to do so. I want to at least get my bachelors degree so I would have more promotional opportunities in the future as a police officer. With my dedication and passion towards my career, I believe I have the potential to excel within the ranks of the NYPD.

2) Continue my education in Chinese history

I have a very strong interest in ancient Chinese history. I will be studying abroad during the upcoming summer semester in China and will be taking courses in Chinese history. I enjoy reading about ancient China as my leisure reading material. But, I will not be able to finish a degree in Chinese history in the near future because I am preoccupied with my accounting degree. A month after I graduate from Baruch, I will enter the police academy, and due to the amount of time necessary for a career in law enforcement, it will be near impossible to attend college at the same time. I plan on putting this goal on hold until I retire from the NYPD around the age of 45. After retirement, I will have all the time in the world to study and go back to school.

3) Start a family

Well what's life without family? I think family is an essential part of life but it is being slowly forgotten about in our fast paced ways of life. Many of my friends are single because they spend too much time with their work and do not wish to settle down. But, I feel that all that hard work and dedication to a career is necessary, yet one also needs to have a home to return to. In terms of how I can achieve a family, I don't really know what I can do at the moment.

4) See more to understand

I don't think it is possible to know about others without actually traveling and experiencing the world. I wish to take a year or two off after I retire to travel the world and just enjoy life. In terms of an itinerary, I definitely will try to travel through most of China, including the rural and undeveloped areas. There is no point in traveling to gain knowledge if I restrict myself to cities and developed areas. In terms of what I can do to achieve this goal, I will have to work hard up till my retirement so I can be financially stable. I mean, how can I travel for two years if I am broke?

My friend, my cousin is also training and getting prepare for the NYPD academy. I think you will have the chance to learn a little about Chinese culture when you interact with people, especially when you are assigned to work in a Chinese community or a Chinese immigrant is coming up to you asking for your help. Of course, some prior knowledge in Chinese culture and history helps too. My family often josh at my cousin because he is American born and only knows a limited Chinese, so imagine when a Chinese immigrant come up to him for his help, and all he would do is say "uh huh" and shrug.

Your goals/visions seems to be very focus, detailed, and realistic as well as solid. I think you know better than I do that you can achieve your goals successfully and be very successful in many other things in life. I also admire you for taking up the honorable profession in law enforcement, targeting crime, protecting people, saving life, and keeping peace. I look forward meeting you as a police officer, but more as a good police officer. I look forward to see you as a member of the NYPD.

I really like your thinking behind your vision about your future. You seem to have well rounded approach towards what you want to be in future. But I'm confused why are you majoring in accounting. Being an NYPD officer, learning chinese history, and having a family, and traveling the world, all are understood about your plan of your future. How will accounting major help your career, wouldn't something life IT expert, criminal law or some other NYPD or research related major is more beneficial. If you are research specialist, you can gain a very good position in NYPD, in historical research on china, and learning about different places around the world. I hope my point was valuable and you succeed in succeed in making your vision true.

I'm really proud of you.. Over the course of our friendship, I've really seen you grow. As I got to know you more, I saw more of your passion and dedication to your goals, visions, morals, and you've actually taken huge steps to reach where you want to be. Keep inspiring yourself and those around you. You're a great person with a big heart, don't let anyone or anything block you from your visions.
...only for the brave :D

You both have identified your objectives and goals, you seem to have clear path in your future. I think you just need to make a more observable time line, that might help you manage it better. Have you thought about when is the right time to start a family? If you are not ready for that, do not try to.

Wow, a NYPD officer. That's really thinking big. It is truly admirable that you would consider such a career, really honorable to risk your life for the sake of the community. I respect that decision and i think you should go for it.

Hey Tai, I once wanted to go into law enforcement and become a detective and solve the hard cases. But due to family conditions I could'nt go forward with that idea so I'am concentrating on the world of accounting. Working in the NYPD, I agree that there is never a dull day. I see advertisments which officers have different roles everyday they work. Many children are going to see you as a role model so that's something you can be proud of in the future.

My roommate in college was a student of Chinese history and he used to share with me many aspects of his studies. A very fascinating course of study. I hope you keep this interest alive even when the very real demands of the NYPD make ancient history seem obscure.

Best wishes--

I really like your goals, but I have to say that the fourth one was my favorite. After your retirement, to take a journey back to the country of your ancestors is an amazing thing to do. I believe that you wish to explore everything that there is to know about your country, well good luck with that, because it is one big country, with one long history.

Hi Tai,

It seems that you have a great passion to hold a higher position in NYPD. It is a great career and the best part is you are continuing your education and will be an advantage for your promotion. Also, you have a great interest in the history of China. It seems your dilema to explore china. Go for it.

good luck with everything.
